George Hamilton Green Lesson 1 Rags 1-4
Hi Everyone!
I had a little time this week to make another video. Since I did a snare drum one last week, it was time to dust off the marimba. Over the summer I've been trying to get my mallet playing up a notch or two. I decided at the beginning of the summer I was going to review the first 10 lessons in the Green book which is one of my favorite mallet books to work on. I also wanted to hear how the marimba sounded recorded though my setup as well as work on some additional editing that I've been trying to learn.
So here it is. I recorded my Musser M 250 Rosewood Bar Marimba using two Shure PGA 81 pencil mics as overheads, one right and one left. The mics went through a Focusrite 18i20 Scarlett interface. I used Logic Pro to capture the audio, Photo Booth to capture the video and then edited them both in i-Movie. Syncing the audio and video was not an easy task. It took several times to get it right. Then of course I figured out a few tricks.
I also use a pair of Musser M-218 Marimba Mallets that lost the yarn so long ago I wouldn't be able to remember if I tried.
I used
a couple of different camera angles and I think I like the first angle the best (camera over my right shoulder) if I'm only using a small section of the instrument. If I'm use a larger portion of the instrument I thing the side angle would work better. I'm also thinking of trying an overhead. Any input would be appreciated.
And of course you got to love my mouse pad. If you don't have one, what are you waiting for? Go get one. Heck get TWO!
Thanks and I hope to see you all in class soon!

The GH Green book is a classic. I used it in college, and I constantly recognize patterns that show up in my improvisations that come from the Green book. My students are also required to use this book. It is the Southern Miss Keyboard Proficiencies that are in the Wootimental Academy. This exercise uses three chords, I IV and V. Try doing the same exercise in every key. I like to go through the circle of 4ths. Kudos Rizzo!
